A Tour in Search of the Historical Legacy of the Korean-Tamil Queen Heo Hwang-ok Held in Busan
Busan, South Korea — June 28, 2025:
The Korean Tamil Sangam, in collaboration with the Daegu Indians organization, successfully organized a cultural and historical tour in Busan on June 28, 2025. The event drew participation from 24 Indian and Korean community members across Daegu, Pohang, and Busan, all of whom enthusiastically took part in this unique cultural experience.
The tour began in the morning at the memorial site of Queen Heo Hwang-ok, also known as Sembavalam, located in the historic Gaya region of Busan. According to the Korean chronicle Samguk Yusa, Queen Sembavalam traveled by sea from the ancient Tamil kingdom of Ay in 48 CE, married King Kim Suro of Gaya, and played a key role in spreading Tamil culture and language in Korea. She is widely revered for her contributions to cultural integration and governance.
Participants were deeply moved as they visited the Queen’s royal mound tomb and the ancient stone pagoda, believed to have been brought by her. The tour also included a visit to a dolmen-type megalith on Gujibong Hill, and the Gimhae National Museum, where attendees explored artifacts that provided insight into ancient Korean history and heritage.
The tour group was warmly welcomed at the museum by the Venerable Monk Do Meyong, Head of the Gaya Culture Center, an organization with a friendship agreement with the Korean Tamil Sangam. Monk Do Meyong met the participants in person, offered blessings, and presented commemorative gifts, adding a spiritual and cultural dimension to the tour.
A highlight of the afternoon was the visit to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, located near the museum grounds — a symbol of peace and unity that delighted the Indian participants. A flavorful multi-course South Indian lunch was served, further enriching the experience.
The second half of the day transitioned into an aesthetic and leisurely exploration of Busan. The group visited the picturesque Gamcheon Culture Village, where vibrant, terraced houses and murals offered perfect photo opportunities. This was followed by a relaxing visit to Dadaepo Beach, where participants enjoyed the sunset and shared tea by the sea. The day concluded with the mesmerizing fountain light show at 8 PM, leaving everyone with lasting memories.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Aravind Raja, President of the Korean Tamil Sangam, expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all volunteers and supporters. He specifically acknowledged Dr. Selestin Raja, Mr. Sampath Kumar, Mr. Manikandan, Dr. Muthusamy, and Engineer Anand for their commitment. Gratitude was also extended to Dr. Vasudev and the Daegu Indians organization for their partnership and support.
Dr. Raja also praised Dr. Palaniyandi for strategic coordination, and Dr. Deepan and Mrs. Premini for curating delicious food and tea. He concluded by emphasizing the significance of this tour as a valuable opportunity to witness and learn about the proud historical legacy of the Tamil Queen in Korea.
Participants expressed their eagerness to take part in future events and thanked the organizing teams for this meaningful and unforgettable cultural journey.
